About Black Wall Street Sparks

One community at a time, we turn connection into opportunity.

Founded in 2011 by Pearl Johnson, Black Wall Street Sparks is a community-centered organization serving Sparks, Reno–Sparks, and Northern Nevada. We strengthen the local Black community by connecting Black-owned businesses with customers, partners, resources, and one another while creating opportunities for entrepreneurs, families, youth, artists, and neighbors to be seen, heard, and supported.

Our mission is to build community power through visibility, advocacy, education, culture, and connection. Through Faces of Success Radio, community outreach, and local partnerships, we report on issues affecting residents, amplify community voices, spotlight Black-owned businesses, and create meaningful spaces for people to share their experiences, concerns, and ideas.

Our services and programs extend beyond business promotion. We provide community information, media coverage, networking opportunities, cultural programming, educational engagement, advocacy, and connections to local resources. We also help foster dialogue and collaboration among residents, community leaders, public officials, law enforcement, faith-based organizations, and partner groups, including the NAACP and the Nevada Justice Coalition.

As news reporters, activists, community leaders, and advocates, we bring attention to issues that impact the people we serve, including hate crimes, racial profiling, police brutality, wrongful convictions, and other forms of injustice. We support residents by elevating their concerns, encouraging informed conversation, connecting people with resources, and promoting constructive action.

Black Wall Street Sparks serves a diverse and growing Northern Nevada community, with a focus on supporting Black residents, entrepreneurs, families, youth, creatives, and community advocates. Our impact is measured through stronger connections, greater visibility for Black-owned businesses, increased access to information and resources, and a more engaged community prepared to work together.

Our purpose is to uplift local voices, expand opportunity, support Black-owned businesses, and help build a stronger, more connected Northern Nevada—one community at a time.
